Ford Boosts Capacity by 40-Thousand Vehicles Due to High Truck Demand

The popularity of this year's new Ford models is quite impressive. The high sales numbers have even prompted the brand to add an extra week of production each year to its North American factories to boost production capacity by an additional 40,000 vehicles.

Ford will accomplish this feat by cutting its traditional two-week summer shutdown in half at six of its assembly plants and seven of its parts and engine plants. This window usually happens around the July 4th holiday as workers prepare for the next model year of vehicles. As Jim Tetreault, Vice President of North American Manufacturing for Ford, explains, "Requiring more capacity from our plants is a good problem to have, and having the flexibility to add a week of production in our plants goes a long way toward solving it."1

Auto sales have been on the rise this year, with total rise of 10.3 for car and truck sales, at about 4.65 million vehicles sold between January 2012-April 2012. Ford sales were up 5 percent overall last month (vs. last year's numbers) predominately because of its new Ford truck lineup, which has been very popular this year.
