Have you ever wondered how many ping-pong balls new Ford Escape holds? Probably not, but Ford does have the answer to this interesting query: approximately 56,778.
Why ping-pong balls? Well, Ford designers prefer the small balls to make certain interior storage space on Ford models matches or outweighs the competitors'. Apparently, ping-pong balls are much more accurate than any computer software or tape measure or when computing numbers across the board. In short, it's all about measuring the distance between the balls, as they represent real-life items that might be stored.
To be specific, the measurements are focused the small storage spaces in the Escape, not the overall storage capacity of the vehicle. In the Escape, these compartments include a hidden storage bin in the backseat and the cup holders in front.
Eric Jackson, Vehicle Aricitecture Superviser for Ford, explains, "It probably doesn't seem like it, but ping-pong balls are more accurate than using a tape measure to get the volume of odd-shaped spaces like a glove compartment."1
Measuring with table tennis balls may seem a little strange to you, but Ford designers understand that sometimes it's important to think "outside of the box" to find the best solutions.
Of course, these designers also created some of the most comfortable, roomy, reliable, and stylish vehicles on the market with the current new Ford vehicles.
