Ford Sends CD Players on their Way

It seems like just yesterday that CD players were considered the hot new technology to find in premium autos. Now, they're getting phased out by new streaming technologies, like those found in the Ford Sync system. Technology develops rapidly, and we here at Pearson Ford are excited to see where things go next.

Think we're exaggerating? Think again. Optical drive (cd players) are already being phased out of laptop and desktop computers, going the way of the floppy disk drive. And, as further proof of our claim, we turn to Ford, who is taking an official stance as the first automaker to phase the technology out of its vehicles.

Before you go condemning Ford, however, keep in mind that this decision was not made lightly, and it is not expected to make its way to American models in the near future. More specifically, Ford is planning to start this phase out with the new Ford Focus in Europe. It will be fitted exclusively with the Ford Sync system.

As for other Ford models... The American automaker has yet to announce when they'll begin hitting the pause button on CD players in their new models, but we're anticipating that it could be soon. At the very least, we can look to sales forecasts for the Ford Sync system as an indicator of the general public's rising interest in streaming technologies. Ford projects that around two-million cars will be fitted with the new system overseas in a mere four years. Is it any wonder that they're going digital?

Sheryl Connelly, Global Trends and Futuring Manager, Ford, lends some insight into Ford's decision, saying, "In-car entertainment technology is moving digital more rapidly than almost any other element of vehicle experience. The in-car CD-Player - much like pay telephones is destined to fade away in the face of exciting new technology."1

It's hard to believe that the CD player in your car could soon be a vintage item. But, if you're one of those who has a hard time letting go of a class feature, then be sure to check out the new Ford models that we carry sooner rather than later.
