Ford is taking yet another giant technological leap ahead of its peers. On October 13, the American automaker announced that they've developed a suite of health and wellness services aimed at helping people manage chronic diseases and disorders en route. To attract even more attention to the ground-breaking project, Ford also took the podium at the "Health and Wellness Connectivity Services on the Go" panel discussion, at last week's Wireless Health 2011 Conference.
"Ford SYNC is well known in the industry and with consumers as a successful in-car infotainment system, but we want to broaden the paradigm, transforming SYNC into a tool that can help improve people's lives as well as the driving experience,"1 said Paul Mascarenas, CTO and VP, Ford Research and Innovation.
As Mascarenas briefly explained, the key to developing the new apps and services is Ford's exclusive SYNC technology. The Blue Oval has leveraged the system's diverse connectivity capabilities to ultimately control a variety of voice-activated, health-oriented smartphone apps. As far-out as it sounds, these apps are designed to do everything from monitor glucose devices to manage diabetes and asthma to report pollen alerts.
Collaborating with Ford on this potentially life-changing/ life-saving technology suite, is Well.doc - a prominent player in the emerging field of mHealth integrated services. While the first two populations, Ford and Well.doc are focusing on are people afflicted with diabetes and asthma and/or allergies, there is potential for the team to later customize in-car apps and services for people trying to manage other chronic conditions.
