The Redesigned 2011 Ford Explorer

You would think there was a decade of separation between the 2010 and 2011 Ford Exploer. Compared to the last year's model, the new Ford Explorer is wider, curvier and far more sophisticated in terms of design, technology, and overall craftsmanship. When looking at the interior and exterior, it should be clear that Ford paid close attention to the details.

U.S. News ranks the 2011 Ford Explorer 1 out of 23 Affordable Midsize SUVs. And Edmunds applauds the SUV's high-class interior quality, abundant high-tech features, nicely sorted ride and handling, and available fuel-efficient turbocharged four-cylinder.

Aside from the new interior, the outside of the 2011 Ford Explorer has been completely re-envisioned with a classier looking front grill that has been painted to blend seamlessly with the sleeker body; shiny five-spoke rims; a rear roof spoiler; and a one-piece lift-gate operated using key fob controls. Inside, the 2011 Ford Explorer showcases a suite of digital controls that look as if they could operate a space shuttle.

Perhaps the most important change in terms of structure and performance is the switch from Ford's more cumbersome body-on-frame construction favored by pickup trucks to a unibody frame shared by the Ford Taurus and Ford Edge crossover. In addition, the new Ford Explorer gains standard front-wheel drive and a powerful V-6 which delivers 20 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing model.

Simply stated: Ford has miraculously transformed the Explorer from a rugged, gas-guzzling beast to a finely tuned, fuel-efficient suburbanite's dream.
